How to use it

  1. 1

Waist at umbilicus level. Standing, relaxed, at end of normal expiration.

  2. 2

Hip at maximum circumference. Around greater trochanters.

  3. 3

WHR vs. waist circumference. Waist alone: male >94 cm (>80 cm female) = increased risk. WHR adds context when body shape varies.

When to use it

Cardiovascular risk
WHR predicts MI better than BMI in INTERHEART study.
Type 2 diabetes screening
Central obesity + WHR > threshold: metabolic syndrome criteria met.
Treatment monitoring
WHR improvement tracks visceral fat loss during weight management.
