How to use it

  1. 1

Revised Harris-Benedict (1984). Inputs: weight (kg), height (cm), age (years), sex.

  2. 2

Apply activity factor. BMR × activity factor = TDEE (total daily energy expenditure).

  3. 3

For hospitalised patients. Use Mifflin-St Jeor or indirect calorimetry — Harris-Benedict overestimates in obesity.

When to use it

Outpatient weight management
Establish energy intake target for weight loss (deficit 500 kcal/day = ~0.5 kg/week).
Nutrition support
Starting point for nasogastric/parenteral feeding prescription.
Mifflin preferred in obesity
Harris-Benedict ± 15% accuracy. Mifflin-St Jeor performs better in obese patients.
