How to use it

  1. 1

    Mifflin-St Jeor formula. RMR = 10×W + 6.25×H − 5×A + 5 (male) or −161 (female).

  2. 2

Overfeeding risk in ICU. Target 80–100% of measured/estimated needs in acute phase. Overfeeding worsens outcomes.

  3. 3

Stress factors in hospitalised patients. ICU: multiply by 1.2–1.5 for moderate illness. Burns: up to 2.0×.

When to use it

Preferred for BMI > 30
Mifflin-St Jeor most accurate for obese patients (ADA recommendation).
Indirect calorimetry not available
Gold standard is measured REE by indirect calorimetry — Mifflin is the best predictor when IC unavailable.
Weight loss programme
Set calorie deficit from TDEE based on Mifflin BMR.
