How to use it

Confirm obstruction. Post-BD FEV₁/FVC < 0.70 required for COPD diagnosis.

Stage by FEV₁ %. GOLD 1 ≥80%, 2 50–79%, 3 30–49%, 4 <30%.

Combine with symptoms. GOLD 2024: ABCD groups (symptoms + exacerbations) guide therapy, not staging alone.
When to use it
- Spirometry-confirmed COPD
- Staging guides inhaler escalation, PR, and oxygen assessment.
- LTOT threshold
- GOLD 3–4 + SpO₂ ≤92%: assess for LTOT (PaO₂ <7.3 kPa at rest).
- Driving restrictions
- GOLD 3–4 with persistent hypoxaemia may affect fitness to drive.
