How to use it

  1. 1

All 7 parameters required. Missing temperature or BP invalidates scoring.

  2. 2

SpO₂ Scale 2 for COPD. Hypercapnic COPD: SpO₂ 88–92% = 0 points (target range). Use Scale 2 as specified by clinician.

  3. 3

NEWS2 ≥ 7 = emergency. Immediate response team activation. ICU referral.

When to use it

General ward admission and monitoring
NHS mandates NEWS2 for all adult inpatients.
Sepsis alert
NEWS2 ≥5 = high likelihood of sepsis (NICE NG51). Start sepsis-6 within 1 hour.
HART trigger
Hospital at Night / Rapid Response Team threshold in most UK trusts = NEWS2 ≥7.

A reference for clinicians and students, not medical advice. A score supports a decision; it does not make one. Check every result against the patient in front of you and your local protocol.
