How to use it

  1. 1

Measure on M-mode echo. LVIDd from leading edge of anterior to leading edge of posterior wall at end-diastole (at R-wave on ECG).

  2. 2

Measure LVIDs. At narrowest point in systole.

  3. 3

Note limitations. Teicholz assumes spherical LV. Regional wall motion abnormalities make it inaccurate. Biplane Simpson's rule preferred.

When to use it

Quick EF estimation when 2D echo quality is limited
M-mode is more reproducible than 2D in poor acoustic windows.
Serial monitoring
Use the same method for serial comparison. Mix of methods introduces error.
Not for regional dysfunction
Post-MI with wall motion abnormalities: use biplane Simpson's method (more accurate).
