Normal (25–60 mmHg)

60 to 260 mmHg

30 to 160 mmHg

How to use it

  1. 1

Measure accurate BP. Narrow PP is very sensitive to measurement technique. Use manual sphyg in suspected tamponade.

  2. 2

Calculate. PP = SBP − DBP.

  3. 3

Interpret in clinical context. Narrow PP (<25) with hypotension and JVD: tamponade/pericarditis. Wide PP with diastolic murmur: AR.

When to use it

Suspected cardiac tamponade
PP <25 mmHg with dyspnoea and JVD — consider pulsus paradoxus measurement.
Aortic regurgitation assessment
Wide PP is a clinical sign of significant AR.
Arterial stiffness research
PP >60 mmHg in the elderly is an independent cardiovascular risk factor.
