Preventive Prosthodontics: Integrating Preventive Prosthodontic Principles Into the Indian Oral Health Policy Framework
By Anirudh BVM, Janette RS and Mahesh M.
Abstract
Background
Prosthodontics is considered to be a rehabilitative discipline that aims at improving the functional, esthetic, and quality aspects of an individual's mouth after the loss of their teeth. Recent research indicates that prosthodontics can also play a preventive role by preserving oral structures, timely intervention, maintenance and prevention of biological and mechanical problems related to prosthodontic rehabilitation. Despite its clinical relevance, the concept of preventive prosthodontics remains underrepresented within Indian oral health policy frameworks.
Objective
The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss in depth the concept of preventive prosthodontics, analyze the importance of preventive prosthodontics in the preservation of oral structures, maintaining oral function, prevention of biological and mechanical complications associated with prosthetic rehabilitation, and supporting long-term patient outcomes across the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of prevention. The review further evaluates the integration of these preventive principles into the Indian oral health policy framework.
