Abstract
Background
Postoperative wound care is a critical component of recovery following laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and adequate patient knowledge helps prevent surgical site infections, promotes healing and reduces complications after discharge. Many patients, however, leave hospital with limited understanding of wound hygiene, dressing care, warning signs of infection, and medication and dietary requirements. This study assessed the knowledge regarding postoperative home-based wound care among cholelithiasis patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
Methods
A quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional design was used among 70 post-cholecystectomy patients admitted to the surgical wards of Sharda Hospital, Greater Noida, selected by purposive (non-probability) sampling. Data were collected using a Self-structured interview schedule for socio-demographic and clinical variables and a 25-item structured knowledge questionnaire covering general hygiene and dressing care, signs of wound complications, diet and nutrition, and physical activity and medication safety. Content validity was established by a panel of five nursing experts and two clinical nurse supervisors, and reliability was confirmed using the Kuder–Richardson Formula 20 (r equal to 0.84). A pilot study was conducted among seven patients prior to the main study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage).
