Abstract
Objective
To describe the clinical and surgical profile and documented complications after abdominal wall hernia repair in a public hospital, and explore associations with recorded clinical conditions.
Methods
Retrospective analysis of 284 surgical procedures confirmed as performed and assigned to 2024– 2025. The composite included seroma, hematoma, surgical site infection, and chronic pain. The clinical count summed positive entries for hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and COPD. Logistic regressions adjusted for age and sex were fitted using the original coding of unknown entries as zero.
Results
Recorded mean age was 51.7 years, and 69.0% of records concerned men. The composite was present in 22/284 records (7.7%), with 13 readmissions and three discharges recorded as death. Composite frequencies were 4.8%, 6.8%, and 20.0% for zero, one, and at least two positive conditions. The adjusted odds ratio for at least two conditions was 4.30 (95% CI 1.65–11.19). Follow-up was documented for 45 procedures, with substantial missing clinical information.
