Abstract
This literature review aims to analyse the scientific evidence on the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in regulating eating behaviour in adults, within an integrated model of health promotion, obesity prevention and support for successful bariatric surgery. Obesity is a multifactorial public health problem in which emotional, cognitive and behavioural factors play a central role, influencing adherence to therapeutic interventions and long-term outcomes. An integrative literature review was conducted, including studies published between 2013 and 2025 in PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO and SciELO, using descriptors related to hypnotherapy, eating behaviour, obesity and bariatric surgery in Portuguese, English and Spanish. The findings indicate that hypnotherapy, particularly when combined with cognitive-behavioural approaches and health education programmes, enhances body awareness, emotional self-regulation and the modification of dysfunctional eating patterns, promoting adherence to healthy eating habits. In the bariatric surgery context, hypnotherapy appears to support psychological preparation in the preoperative phase and reduce behavioural relapse in the postoperative period, contributing to sustained weight loss. It is concluded that hypnotherapy is a promising complementary intervention for adult obesity management and the promotion of adaptive eating behaviours; however, further longitudinal studies and controlled clinical trials are required to strengthen the evidence base and standardise intervention protocols.
