Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder of reproductive age, characterised by hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction and polycystic ovarian morphology. The study therefore aimed to analyse the influence of insulin resistance on women’s health and its relationship with PCOS. A literature review of the last five years was conducted, with a sample of reviews, consensus statements and case-control studies. Insulin resistance is present in all phenotypes, even in women of normal weight, and compensatory hyperinsulinaemia stimulates ovarian androgen synthesis and reduces sex hormone-binding globulin, which perpetuates anovulation. It was concluded that metabolic screening and lifestyle changes are essential.
