Abstract
Hormonal contraceptives modify the levels of oestrogens and progestogens, which also modulate mood. The study therefore aimed to analyse the scientific evidence on the effects of hormonal contraceptives on women’s mental health, identifying the psychological risks and benefits associated with their use. A literature review was conducted with a sample of cohort studies, clinical trials and reviews. Large population registries associate initiation of hormonal contraception with greater antidepressant use and depression diagnosis, especially in adolescents and in the first months; a randomised trial showed a modest reduction in general well-being; and the risk of suicidal behaviour is concentrated in adolescents and some progestogen-only methods. It was concluded that contraceptive choice should be individualised.
