Abstract
Cervical cancer screening is moving from cytology to primary human papillomavirus (HPV) testing with risk-based management. The study therefore aimed to analyse the evidence and updated international guidelines on the clinical management of abnormal cervical cancer screening results. A literature review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Medline and SciELO, with a sample of 20 guidelines and studies. United States guidelines recommend deciding according to the immediate risk of grade 3 or higher cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, with colposcopy at 4% or more and expedited treatment above 60%, and partial genotyping and p16/Ki-67 dual staining improve triage. It was concluded that management must be personalised and adapted to available resources.
