How to use it

  1. 1

Score each ADL. Maximum 100 = fully independent. Minimum 0 = fully dependent.

  2. 2

BI ≥ 60 = community discharge possible. With appropriate home support.

  3. 3

Serial assessment. Tracks rehabilitation progress; goals set around domain-specific improvement.

When to use it

Stroke rehabilitation
Baseline and discharge BI determine rehab intensity and placement.
Nursing home admission
BI < 20 typically requires 24h nursing care.
Research outcome measure
BI 90–100 at 90 days = good outcome in many stroke trials.
