Advancing HIV treatment: The impact of a global therapeutics network
By Currier JS.
Abstract
National Institutes of Health (NIH) investments over recent decades in the Advancing Clinical Therapeutics Globally (ACTG) network have helped to transform human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from a deadly infection to a chronic disease. The ACTG has expanded global clinical trial capacity and trained generations of physician-scientists engaged in clinical and translational research. With a structure that integrates a scientific leadership group, statistical and laboratory centers, and community engagement, with dedicated clinical sites, the ACTG has produced impactful, guideline-changing research, engaged in extensive interdisciplinary collaborations, and influenced several areas of HIV-related science. This review highlights the ACTG's contributions to HIV therapeutics and related infections, demonstrating the value of this investment and serving as a model for future approaches to help address other chronic diseases.
