Sex dimorphic outcomes after whole blood resuscitation in trauma patients: a national database study
By Topper GV, Egodage T, Waters JP and 8 others.
Abstract
Background
Injured females experience improved outcomes after component therapy resuscitation. We hypothesize that females <52 transfused with whole blood (WB) have improved survival, lower blood utilization, and lower complication rates compared with males and females ≥52.
Methods
This retrospective analysis assessed Trauma Quality Improvement Program Participant Use File patients aged 18-90 transfused WB 1/1/2020-12/31/2022. Patients who were pregnant, transferred, anticoagulated, died <1 hour, had a blood dyscrasia, or severe head injury were excluded. Outcomes were compared between: female and male patients <52, female and male patients ≥52, and females <52 and ≥52, separated by injury mechanism. Univariate and multivariate analyses were applied, with the latter controlled for injury factors, race, medical history, time to hemorrhage control procedure, and complications.
