Abstract
Objectives
To evaluate the effects of resistance training, whey protein supplementation, and nandrolone decanoate administration on renal function in Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: 70 male rats were divided into seven groups (n=10/group): Control (C), Resistance Training (T), Whey Protein (W; 2 g·kg⁻¹·day⁻¹), Training + Whey (WT), Whey + Decanoate (WD; 0.5 mg·kg⁻¹·week⁻¹), Training + Whey + Decanoate (WTD), and Training + Decanoate (TD). The training protocol consisted of vertical ladder climbing 3 times per week (4 sets: 50%, 75%, 90%, and 100% of 1RM). After 12 weeks, renal function biomarkers were evaluated: plasma urea, creatinine, glucosuria, and proteinuria.
Results
Urinary analyses revealed a critical increase in protein excretion, with C, W, T, and WT groups showing significantly lower values compared to the WTD group. This pattern of marked proteinuria in the WTD group was confirmed in the 24-hour analysis (p<0.05), indicating impairment of the glomerular barrier. For urinary urea, significant variations were observed between C vs. WT/TD and T vs. WT/TD, while 24-hour analysis showed differences concentrated between C vs. W and W vs. TD. Urinary creatinine showed elevation in the WT, WD, TD, and WTD groups compared to Control and T groups. In 24-hour clearance, group C differed significantly from W, WT, and WTD.
