Abstract
Power meters represent a valid resource for verifying the power produced by athletes, contributing to the training process and to sports performance. Such measurements can be performed with accuracy and reliability, making the power meter a useful instrument for monitoring and evaluating the demands imposed on the athlete. This review presents information regarding the use of power meters in running training, aiming to analyze their use in terms of applicability, benefits, limitations, and contributions to the advancement of scientific and practical knowledge about the use of these devices in the sports context and in the training of athletes. Both critical power profiles and recorded power profiles have been used to monitor training-induced changes, and due to the inadequacy of current methods, this review highlights the need to establish new methods capable of quantifying the effects of training loads and modeling their implications for performance. Finally, the review classified the application of power meters as important for coaches and athletes, especially professional athletes, who require greater precision in the design, development, and control of training sessions as well as in overall planning. In this way, using power as a tool and as a variable for monitoring training can improve the accuracy in reading and interpreting sports performance data and in the athlete’s adaptation to the demands of the sport.
