Abstract
Objective
To describe the process of development and validation of the effectiveness of an educational booklet on the importance of breastfeeding for high-risk pregnant women followed at the Women’s Clinic of Gravatá/PE.
Method
This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, aimed at the development and validation of a breastfeeding booklet, created within the extension project “Promotion of pregnant women’s health: addressing obesity during pregnancy – Year VIII of the Academic Center of Vitória/PE”, with evaluation carried out by coordinators, tutors, and pregnant women.
Results
The booklet entitled: “Breastfeeding is Health” was developed, consisting of 18 pages addressing topics such as the importance of breastfeeding, benefits for mother and baby, nipple types, breast care, correct latch, and milk storage. The material was prepared based on the main doubts of pregnant women and family members and was adjusted according to the evaluators’ suggestions. There was a predominance of pregnant women aged between 20 and 29 years (52.6%), of mixed race/brown skin color (73.7%), in a stable union (36.8%), with completed high school education (42.1%), mostly homemakers (36.8%) or self-employed (31.6%). Most had a family income of up to one minimum wage (57.9%) and lived with their partner (68.4%). Regarding the booklet, 84.2% understood the vocabulary and illustrations, and 100% did not identify difficult terms.
