Abstract
Objective
To describe the ultrasound lesions encountered in male infertility at the Urology Department of the University Hospital of Conakry.
Materials and methods
This was a prospective, descriptive study conducted over six (6) months, from October 1, 2016, to March 31, 2017. The study included 71 patients seen for desire to have a child, who had a sperm analysis and a scrotal or endorectal ultrasound.
Results
The mean age of the patients was 36 years, with a range from 24 to 54 years. The mean duration of infertility was 3.66 years. The semen analysis was normal in 26.76% of cases, and asthenospermia was the most frequent sperm abnormality, present in 45.07% of patients. In scrotal ultrasound with Doppler, varicocele was the leading cause of male infertility, accounting for 95.31% of cases, followed by testicular abnormalities at 70.31%. Varicocele and testicular hypotrophy were the primary causes of sperm analysis abnormalities, predominantly asthenospermia, in 27 and 15 patients, respectively. Hyperechoic areas of the prostate and distension of the seminal vesicles were the most frequent abnormalities during endorectal ultrasound, respectively in 42.86% and 28.57% of cases.
