Clinical Profile and Management Outcomes of Patients with Ureteric Calculi: A Prospective Observational Study
By Shane Jayachandra.
Abstract
Background
Ureteric calculi commonly present with acute pain and may cause urinary obstruction. Management depends on stone size, location, obstruction and symptoms.
Objective
To evaluate the clinical profile, stone characteristics, management strategies and short-term outcomes of patients with ureteric calculi.
Methods
A prospective observational study included 120 adults with radiologically confirmed ureteric calculi. Demographic, clinical, laboratory and imaging findings were recorded. Management was conservative or interventional according to clinical indications. Stone clearance and treatment outcomes were assessed at follow-up.
Results
The mean age was 42.8 ± 13.1 years, with male predominance. Renal colic was the commonest presentation. Distal ureteric stones and stones ≤5 mm were frequent. Conservative management was frequently used in patients with smaller stones, while ureteroscopy was the commonest active procedure. Overall stone-free status was 90.0%.
