Pulmonary Sarcoidosis Mimicking Multifocal Adenocarcinoma: An Atypical Radiologic and Diagnostic Dilemma
By Aya Gohar, Alaa Hmeedan, Ashraf Saeed and 2 others.
Abstract
Known as "the great mimic," sarcoidosis often poses a diagnostic challenge.Although common radiological manifestations include hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy and micronodules, atypical patterns can also be encountered, requiring awareness of the disease's potential radiological manifestations to allow for prompt diagnosis and management. We report a case of sarcoidosis presenting with predominant groundglass opacities (GGOs) on high-resolution CT (HRCT) of the chest, mimicking adenocarcinoma in situ. The diagnosis was established by histopathology after other causes of pulmonary GGOs had been excluded. This report highlights the importance of maintaining a high degree of clinical suspicion and pursuing a comprehensive workup, including tissue diagnosis, even in minimally symptomatic patients.
