Motricidade orofacial e mastigação em crianças autistas: revisão integrativa
By Juliana Muri de Castro, Rudson Sousa Araujo and Vinícius da Silva Freitas.
Abstract
This integrative review examined research on orofacial motor function and chewing in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), focusing on implications for joint practice in speech-language pathology and physiotherapy. Nine studies published between 2023 and August 2026 were examined, drawing on scientific databases and supplementary sources. The analysis addressed three areas: chewing performance and oral movements; relationships among feeding, sensory processing, and mealtime participation; and opportunities for shared assessment and care. The studies describe chewing difficulties, differences in lip closure and oral praxis, and associations between these findings and feeding challenges. However, the studies differ in their measures and populations. Assessment should therefore consider oral function alongside each child’s sensory, postural, and functional needs. Joint practice between speech-language pathologists and physiotherapists is a relevant clinical implication, although its effectiveness requires specific investigation.
