Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused millions of confirmed cases in humans, while 929 cases have been reported in animals in 42 species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pet-adapted COVID AR IgG ELISA kit, to detect the presence of seric specific antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in dogs and cats from the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), Argentina, from July 2020 to April 2022. Significant levels of seroreactivity were found in both dogs (32%) and cats (21%), compared with those levels in a pool of 112 pre-pandemic sera (8.1%). In dogs, the OR (Odds Ratio) obtained suggests a possible association between positive results and SARS-CoV-2 exposure. However, in cats, more information is needed to support a possible association. In addition, we found insufficient evidence for an association between seroreactivity and the presence of any symptom (p-values of 0.223 and 0.781 for dogs and cats, respectively).
