By Isaúl García Rodríguez and Lena Angeles Judit Zempoalteca Duran.
Abstract
Breast cancer is a disease that significantly impacts incidence and mortality rates in Mexico; consequently, understanding how patients process this diagnosis is a crucial area of study. According to Registered Death Statistics (EDR) in Mexico, 89,633 deaths due to malignant tumors were recorded among individuals aged 20 and older; of these, 8,034 were attributed to breast cancer, representing 9.0% of the total. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of anxiety and depression among patients diagnosed with breast cancer at a tertiary care hospital. The research employs a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional design to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression in women with breast cancer; the instruments used will be the Beck Anxiety Inventory and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. This research is being conducted to address the need to investigate how nursing professionals can provide timely interventions supporting patients' mental and social well-being alongside psychological treatment by leveraging their primary care tools and knowledge regarding the specific needs of oncology patients.
