Thanatassistophobie – Definition und begriffliche Verortung eines neuen soziopolitischen und ethischen Phänomens / Thanatassistophobia – Definition and Conceptual Positioning of a New Sociopolitical and Ethical Phenomenon
By Wolfgang Köllmann.
Abstract
Abstract This paper defines the term thanatassistophobia, coined by Mag. Wolfgang Kollmann. The term describes the collective, ideological, and socio-psychological stance adopted by opponents of assisted suicide toward the societal, moral, and systemic consequences of the normalisation of assisted dying. It fills a terminological gap in bioethical and political discourse by making the affective, existential, and paternalistic mechanisms of resistance within this discourse conceptually identifiable. The term highlights how an often unfounded and exaggerated institutionalised fear can lead to the devaluation of the autonomy and decision-making capacity of people who wish to die, subjecting them instead to moral prescriptions and paternalistic control.
