Louis Slotin's Fatal Radiation Exposure in the 1946 Criticality Accident: A Historical and Scientific Review A Review of Reported Dose Estimates, Acute Radiation Syndrome, Historical Evidence, and Radiation Protection Implications
By Mikheil Jorbenadze.
Abstract
A historical and scientific review of Louis Slotin's fatal 1946 criticality accident at Los Alamos. This paper explores the physics of the mixed neutron-gamma excursion, the clinical course of acute radiation syndrome, and the complexities of retrospective dosimetry. It critically examines the widely cited 21 Sv dose estimate, emphasizing the need to distinguish between historical radiation units and modern dosimetric quantities. The review concludes by highlighting the accident's pivotal role in shaping modern criticality safety, advocating for robust engineered controls and formal procedures over manual manipulation.
