Abstract
Background
Postoperative pain and delayed recovery are common after impacted mandibular third molar surgery. Dexmedetomidine provides sedation and analgesia with potential postoperative benefits compared with fentanyl.
Aim
To compare the postoperative analgesic efficacy and recovery of intravenous dexmedetomidine and fentanyl in impacted mandibular third molar surgery. Materials and Methods: This prospective comparative clinical study included 40 patients allocated into two groups (n = 20 each) by alternate patient allocation. Group D received intravenous dexmedetomidine (1 μg/kg) and Group F received intravenous fentanyl (2 μg/kg). Postoperative pain was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale. Recovery time and time to first rescue analgesic were recorded. Data were analyzed using the independent Student's t-test (P < 0.05).
