Beyond Survival: Reconstructive Surgery as Part of the Continuum of Care in Conflict Settings
By Esra Suliman Adam Osman.
Abstract
This poster examines the gap between acute trauma care and reconstructive care in conflict-affected settings. Using the case of a child who survived a bombing in South Darfur, Sudan, and sustained severe facial and neck injuries at age three, it shows how delayed reconstruction leaves lasting functional, developmental and social impairment. It presents a three-phase Reconstructive Roadmap (Functional Baseline, Structural Integrity, Aesthetic & Social Reconstruction) as a clinical and advocacy framework. It calls for early reconstructive assessment, local surgical capacity-building, outreach missions and sustained specialist partnerships.
