Adverse Effects and Clinical Management of Topical Corticosteroids in Adults Aged 18–60 Years: A Systematic Review
By Dr. S. Aravinth Vijay Jesuraj & Dr. L. Sutharson Malavika P U.
Abstract
Background
Topical corticosteroids (TCS) have been the cornerstone of dermatological therapy for over six decades because of their anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, antiproliferative and vasoconstrictive effects. Although highly effective for inflammatory dermatoses, inappropriate use, prolonged therapy, self-medication and irrational fixed-dose combinations have led to a wide range of local and systemic adverse effects. Evidence on these complications and their prevention remains dispersed across multiple study designs.
Objective
To systematically synthesize evidence on the adverse effects of topical corticosteroids and current strategies for their prevention and clinical management in adults aged 18–60 years.
