Laparoscopic Vs. Open Appendectomy: A Prospective Study of Postoperative Recovery and Complication Rates
By Nitin Kumar, Pankaj Saunakiya and Surya Prakash.
Abstract
Background
Acute appendicitis is the commonest abdominal surgical emergency, and appendectomy is among the most frequently performed emergency operations. While laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) has largely displaced open appendectomy (OA) in well-resourced settings, comparative evidence from resource-constrained public tertiary centres, particularly regarding intermediate recovery outcomes, remains limited.
Objective
To compare postoperative recovery and complication rates between LA and OA in patients with acute appendicitis at a tertiary care teaching institution.
Methods
This prospective comparative observational study was conducted in the Department of General Surgery, Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, Jhansi, over 18 months. Eighty patients aged 18–60 years with acute appendicitis were enrolled (40 LA, 40 OA). Pain (VAS), analgesic duration, hospital stay, return to activities, complications, and wound healing at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months were assessed. Data were analysed using SPSS v25.0, with p<0.05 considered significant.
