Abstract
Objective
This study aimed to evaluate the association between total and class-specific polyphenol intake and body composition markers.
Methods
A cross-sectional, population-based household study was conducted with 490 individuals aged ≥ 20 years. Demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, dietary (24-hour dietary recall [24HR]), and anthropometric data were collected. Polyphenol intake was estimated based on the 24HR data and the Phenol-Explorer database. The association between tertiles of total and subclass polyphenol intake and body composition markers was assessed using linear regression models adjusted for potential confounders, with a 95% confidence interval.
Results
The mean energy-adjusted total polyphenol intake was 873.87 ± 1086.37 mg/day. Higher consumption (2nd and 3rd tertiles) of total polyphenols, flavonoids, flavonols, and other polyphenols was inversely associated with anthropometric markers such as waist-to-height ratio (WHtR; β = –0.01; p = 0.04), triceps skinfold thickness (TSF; β = –2.98; p = 0.02) and subscapular skinfold thickness (SSF; β = –3.11; p= < 0.01).
