Abstract
Intraepithelial lesions of the lower genital tract are related to persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and may be multifocal. The study therefore aimed to analyse the accuracy of colposcopy, colposcopic-histological correlation, associated factors and therapeutic response of these lesions in women. A systematic review guided by PRISMA was conducted, with a sample of clinical and epidemiological studies and consensus statements on cervical, vaginal, vulvar and anal lesions. Cervical lesions predominated; colposcopy showed moderate agreement with histology; and multicentricity was associated with persistent high-risk HPV infection, multiple infection, menopause and immunosuppression. It was concluded that these lesions require directed biopsy and comprehensive evaluation of the lower genital tract.
