Abstract
Iatrogenic Cushing syndrome is the most frequent cause of hypercortisolism in childhood. The study therefore aimed to describe the presentation, diagnosis and course of iatrogenic Cushing syndrome due to topical clobetasol in an infant and the access factors that favoured the iatrogenesis. A case report with 15 months of follow-up was used, involving a Kichwa Otavalo infant who received 0.05% clobetasol propionate in the diaper area for eight weeks. He presented moon face, centripetal obesity, dorsal hump, linear growth arrest, cortisol of 0.97 µg/dL and adrenocorticotropic hormone below 1.0 pg/mL, with nine infections during recovery and normalisation of cortisol at 18 months of age. It was concluded that super-potent corticosteroids under occlusion can cause severe adrenal suppression.
