Abstract
Hepatitis B remains a public health problem, and its most serious complication is acute liver failure. The study therefore aimed to analyse the clinical course and diagnostic approach of a patient with severe acute hepatitis B and concomitant acute calculous cholecystitis, in the light of current evidence. A case report with literature review was used, involving a 33-year-old man with jaundice, abdominal pain, transaminases of 1458 and 2016 U/L, total bilirubin of 14.58 mg/dL, positive surface antigen and calculous cholecystitis. With supportive treatment, alanine aminotransferase fell to 928 U/L and bilirubin to 8.30 mg/dL within five days, without encephalopathy or severe coagulopathy. It was concluded that a complete serological profile and monitoring of prognostic markers are essential.
