Abstract
Without intervention, mother-to-child transmission of HIV reaches 15% to 45%, but it can be reduced to less than 1% with optimal management. The study therefore aimed to synthesise recent evidence on the multidisciplinary management of HIV in pregnancy for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission. A PRISMA-guided systematic review was conducted in seven biomedical databases, with a sample of 29 studies out of 250 records. Early diagnosis, antiretroviral therapy with viral suppression at delivery, control of coinfections and support for mental health and adherence were the pillars of management, with 89.3% undetectable viral load at delivery in a national cohort. It was concluded that a coordinated multidisciplinary team is required.
