Abstract
Post-dialysis hypertension is a frequent complication in adults with advanced chronic kidney disease and is associated with increased cardiovascular risk and mortality. The study therefore aimed to analyse the pathophysiological, clinical and technical determinants of post-dialysis hypertension in adults on haemodialysis, as well as the strategies for its diagnosis and treatment. A narrative and analytical literature review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus and ScienceDirect, prioritising recent publications. Volume overload due to failure to reach dry weight, high dialysate sodium, endothelial dysfunction, sympathetic and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activation and arterial stiffness explained its persistence, and 24- to 44-hour ambulatory monitoring was the reference method. It was concluded that volume control, complemented by individualised antihypertensive therapy, is the cornerstone of treatment.
