Abstract
Introduction . Existing literature data on the differences and specificity of certain pathological processes in different ethnic groups served as the basis for evaluating the course of diarrhea and the effectiveness of therapy in representatives inhabiting Altai and Buryatia, including those of the Mongoloid race. Aim. To evaluate the effectiveness of colloidal silicon dioxide (Polysorb MP) in the complex treatment of intestinal infections in representatives of various ethnic groups living in Northern Asia. Materials and methods . The study included 62 patients with acute gastroenteritis of moderate severity: Group 1 (Russians, representatives of the Caucasian race) consisted of residents of Barnaul (n = 32), and Group 2 (Buryats, representatives of the Mongoloid race) consisted of residents of Ulan-Ude (n = 30). The patients’ age ranged from 18 to 66 years (34.63 ± 2.77 and 34.13 ± 2.64 in the groups, respectively). In accordance with the study design, a silicon dioxide-based enterosorbent (Polysorb MP) was included in the complex therapy. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistica 10.0 analysis package and MS Excel 2010 (Windows 10). Results. The effectiveness of the enterosorbent was assessed by the duration of intoxication symptoms, the severity and duration of dyspepsia (gastric and intestinal), and the time to resolution of diarrhea. With differences in the dyspeptic syndrome – a predominance of gastritis symptoms in the Group 2 and enteritis in the Group 1, the dynamics of the clinical picture with the intake of the enterosorbent (Polysorb MP) were comparable in both groups in terms of the severity and duration of dyspeptic and pain syndromes (1.94 and 2.51 days, respectively) and in terms of intoxication manifestations (1.34 and 1.27). In both groups, the duration of the diarrheal syndrome did not exceed 3–4 days and 5 bed-days. Conclusion. The use of the colloidal silicon dioxide (Polysorb MP) in representatives of the Caucasian and Mongoloid races showed comparable effectiveness in the complex therapy of moderate acute intestinal infections.
