Abstract
Introduction
Drowning is one of the leading causes of death among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), making it essential to explore effective approaches to ensure their water safety.
Objective
To identify and analyze, through a systematic review, academic evidence on water safety strategies and drowning prevention for children with ASD. Methodology: The search used the keywords “Prevention Drowning,” “Autism Spectrum Disorder,” and “Water Competency” in the following databases: PubMed, Medline, Scielo, Google Scholar, and Cochrane, resulting in the final selection of recent scientific articles published between 2015 and 2025, following the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Results
The analyzed studies indicate that adapted swimming programs, aquatic occupational therapy, and sensory stimulation techniques promote significant improvements in water competency, reduce the risk of drowning, and provide physical, emotional, and social benefits to children.
