Evidence-Based Recommendations for Preventing and Managing Enterostomy Leakage
By jiatong xu and QinFen Song.
Abstract
Objective
To systematically evaluate and synthesize current evidence on enterostomy leakage prevention and management, establishing an evidence-based framework for clinical practice protocol.
Methods
A comprehensive search was conducted across major biomedical databases (such as UpToDate, PubMed, CNKI) from inception through December 2024. Included literature encompassed decision support systems, guidelines, expert consensus statements, systematic reviews, and evidence syntheses addressing enterostomy leakage prevention and care. Dual-reviewer independently evaluated literature quality, extracted and synthesized evidence, and graded the evidence level of included studies.
Results
Analysis of 14 qualified sources (8 clinical guidelines, 4 decision support systems, 2 expert consensus) yielded 40 evidence-based recommendations organized into six critical domains: preoperative stoma site optimization, patient education for leakage prevention, optimal selection of ostomy pouch systems and accessories, leakage follow-up, identification of leakage risk factors, and comprehensive leakage management.
