Gas-Free Macular Hole Surgery With Viscoelastic-Assisted ILM Flap Stabilization: Surgical Technique and Outcomes
By Franziska Eckardt, Caroline Stueven, Barbara Sophie Brunner and 4 others.
Abstract
Purpose
To evaluate the feasibility, anatomical outcomes, and early functional recovery of a gas- and perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL)-free inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap technique using a superiorly based flap stabilized with a dispersive ophthalmic viscoelastic device (OVD) for the treatment of full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs).
Methods
This retrospective pilot study included eyes undergoing primary FTMH surgery using a superiorly based inverted ILM flap. The ILM flap was positioned over the macular hole and stabilized with dispersive OVD, without the use PFCL at any stage of the procedure. No gas tamponade was used. The primary outcome was anatomical FTMH closure. Secondary outcomes included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), ellipsoid zone recovery, epiretinal membrane formation, and postoperative complications.
