Résumé
Population aging and the increasing institutionalization of older adults highlight the need for attention to the psychological conditions of tis population, especially in view of factors such as social isolation, weakened family bonds, loss of autonomy, and changes in routine. LongTerm Care Institutions for Older Adults (ILPIs) are important care settings; however, they may also be associated with situations of psychological vulnerability. This study aimed to analyze the psychological health status of individuals residing in ILPIs in the Central Health Region of the State of Rondônia, identifying the frequency of signs suggestive of depression and aspects related to the institutionalization process. An observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study with a quantitative approach was conducted, involving the in-person administration of the abbreviated version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) to older adults residing in the institutions surveyed. A total of 27 participants were evaluated, comprising 22 men and 5 women, with an overall mean age of 74.7 years. The results showed that 11 participants (40.7%) had scores suggestive of depression, while 16 (59.3%) did not present suggestive signs. The relevance of factors such as family estrangement, loneliness, reduced autonomy, changes in routine, and decreased social interaction to the psychological well-being of institutionalized older adults was also observed. It is concluded that the population evaluated presents significant psychological vulnerability, highlighting the need for mental health promotion strategies, strengthening of family and social bonds, encouragement of physical activity, and the development of psychological support and follow-up actions in ILPIs.
