Résumé
Objective
To compare the effects of isotonic vs. hypotonic maintenance crystalloid therapy on fluid balance, urine output, and electrolyte homeostasis in healthy Beagles.
Methods
In this 2-phase clinical study, nine healthy Beagles received intravenous isotonic (lactated Ringer's solution with 5% dextrose plus 26 mEq/L KCl) and hypotonic (Normosol-M and 5% dextrose plus 17 mEq/L KCl) crystalloids at an allometric maintenance rate for 48 h, with a 10-day washout between treatments from July 3 to September 29, 2021. Variables of interests were assessed every 12 h during treatment, and results were analyzed with baseline-adjusted linear mixed-effects models. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Timepoint-specific comparisons were exploratory and unadjusted for multiplicity.
