Résumé
Moxifloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used in the treatment of acute bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and chronic bronchitis. The study aims to determine the embryotoxic effects of moxifloxacin, that is administered to fertile chicken eggs at different doses during different stages of embryonic development. A total of 420 fertile chicken eggs were used in the study. The eggs were divided into two main groups for treatment on 7th and 14th days of incubation. Each main group was divided into 7 subgroups, each containing 30 eggs, and moxifloxacin was administered. These subgroups consisted of control group (no treatment), negative control group (0.9% NaCl), and experimental groups to which five different doses of moxifloxacin (1600, 800, 400, 200, and 100 µg·kg-1) was administered. On the 21st day of incubation, all eggs hatched, and blood samples for biochemical analysis, as well as liver and kidney tissues for histopathological analysis, were collected from six animals randomly selected among the live chicks. In the study, serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine levels were measured using an autoanalyzer. No statistically significant change was observed in serum biochemistry levels (P>0.05). In histopathological examinations, statistically insignificant changes were detected in liver and kidney tissues, which were independent of the dose and also observed in the control group (P>0.05). In conclusion, it can be stated that the administration of moxifloxacin at different doses and developmental stages did not have a significant adverse effect on embryos based on the evaluated parameters. However, studies involving different dose ranges, administration durations, and additional molecular analyses are required to comprehensively demonstrate the embryotoxic potential of moxifloxacin.
