Résumé
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) with a continuously increasing prevalence, particularly among the elderly population. Older adults are at high risk due to physiological changes and unhealthy lifestyles, including excessive sugar consumption. Education on sugar intake control is a strategic step in the promotive and preventive efforts against DM. This community service activity aimed to improve elderly knowledge regarding the importance of limiting sugar consumption as a preventive measure against DM. The method used was interactive lectures and question-and-answer sessions, supported by educational leaflets. The activity was conducted on June 16, 2025, at UPTD Puskesmas Ulak Tano, Simangambat Subdistrict, Padang Lawas Utara Regency. A total of 18 elderly participants took part in this activity. Prior to the counseling session, a pre-test was conducted to assess the participants' initial knowledge, followed by material presentation, leaflet distribution, and discussion. Afterward, participants took a post-test and underwent blood glucose screening. The results showed an increase in participants’ understanding of the dangers of excessive sugar intake and the importance of a healthy diet. The participants’ enthusiasm during discussions reflected the effectiveness of the educational approach used. Community-based education using simple media such as leaflets proved effective in raising awareness and motivating the elderly to adopt a healthier lifestyle. This activity contributes to the promotive and preventive efforts in preventing DM at the community level
